What is MDF?

Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) is made by bonding wood fibres together under high pressure. These are then pressed into boards.

The result is a smooth-surfaced board which has an even texture throughout. It is very economical as it uses all the waste wood, even the tree bark, from normal timber production.

Our unfinished MDF radiator cabinets and bookcases are easy to paint, gently sand any rough edges using fine grade sandpaper. Remove any dust with a soft damp cloth. Then coat with primer before applying your chosen colour. As with all woodwork, it is strongly recommended that you wear a mask and work in a well-ventilated area.

What is a wood veneer?

A veneer is a thin layer of a material, in this case wood, which is used to cover another material, for example MDF, to create a solid wood effect. The advantage is that a veneer is less costly than solid wood and is not as heavy.
